Housing Boss a Credit to the Union

Wigan & Leigh Housing Chief Executive, Peter Gee, signs on the dotted line as Unify's Andy Collins looks on

Unify Credit Union, the borough’s community savings and loan co–operative, is expanding its services to people in Leigh.

The co–operative opened its second collection point in the town — and its tenth borough–wide — this week (Monday 8th September), at Higher Folds Area Housing Office. And, as a gesture of support, Wigan & Leigh Housing Chief Executive Peter Gee, added his name to the growing number of Unify members.

Over half a million people in the UK are members of credit unions, giving them access to a convenient savings scheme and low cost loans. As co-operatives, credit unions’ profits are given back to the members in the form of a dividend. Unify is run by the community for the community and the credit union welcomes anyone, regardless of status. Members receive free loan and life insurance and recently received a 1.5% dividend on their savings.

Peter Gee, Chief Executive of Wigan & Leigh Housing says:

“We are delighted to support credit unions in the borough. They do excellent work in providing secure low cost loans and assisting people from falling into debt. And the more local we can make the service, the better it is for everybody.”

Unify’s other Leigh collection point is at Stonehouse Nursery, Etherstone Street. Anybody wanting more information should telephone 01942 701706 or 517894, go to one of the collection points or visit www.unifycu.org.
