It’s been a ‘tree-mendous’ week in Westleigh, with community spirit to the fore as the ‘Trees’ estate held its first ever environment week.
Around 30 children helped Wigan Council’s clean-up programme with litter picking, bulb planting and tree planting. There was even an environmental craft and awareness day at Westleigh Methodist Primary School.
Locals are already enjoying a tidier estate, but will really see the fruits of their labour in the spring when the bulbs flower and trees planted around Hourigan House care home in the centre of the estate get established.
Local councillor Anne Turnock said:
“This was an educational and fun event and it’s very nice to see local children getting involved. This is the start of making the estate a cleaner and greener place to live.”
There are more environmental initiatives planned for the future including new litter bins, more tree planting and tidying up landscaped areas.
Council Street Scene co-ordinator Paul Dandy wants more communities to get involved like this. He says:
“Please ring me on 01942 705244 if you want to help make a difference to your local environment.”
