Wigan Gets Ship Shape

Wigan town hall is the venue next Tuesday (17th May) for the borough’s fourth annual Sheltered Housing and Information Partnership (SHIP) event.

Aimed at showcasing the services and housing provision available to the borough’s over 50’s, the event will involve the likes of Age Concern, Wigan Council, the Pension Service, and Wigan & Leigh Housing. And, in keeping with celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, the whole event will have a VE Day theme.

As well as the displays and information, there’ll be some great entertainment throughout the day provided by local primary school children, a 40’s tribute singer and dancing to a live swing band — all in keeping with the VE Day theme.

There will also be a photography competition, raffle prizes, a guided tour of the magnificent Edwardian town hall and organised trips out to sheltered housing schemes.

Wigan Council’s Network Co-ordinator for Older People, Helen Coffey says:

“SHIP promises to be even bigger and better than last year’s event, with plenty for the over 50s to see and do, refreshments, and even a ‘Sloppy Slipper Exchange’ for the first 200 people who bring in their old slippers! And it’s all free.”

Visiting SHIP on their last day in office will be the Mayor and Mayoress of Wigan, Councillor John and Margaret Hilton.
