Repairs services to 25,000 council tenants are being revolutionised from next Monday (2nd August).
Tenants needing day to day repairs to their homes will have a greater choice of appointment slots, a wider range of tradesmen (and tradeswomen!) carrying out the work, and different contractors will be at work in the east and west of the borough.
From Monday, Mears Building Services will be responsible for all properties in Wigan & Leigh Housing’s Wigan Homes sector, which includes Wigan town centre, Beech Hill, Marsh Green, Worsley Hall, Worsley Mesnes, Ashton, Ince, and Pemberton.
Tenants in the Leigh Homes area, which includes Leigh town centre, Westleigh, Higher Folds, Hag Fold, Atherton, Tyldesley, Platt Bridge, Golborne and Hindley, will be served by Leigh Building Services, Wigan Council’s revamped Building Services department.
A major feature of Mears’ service will be its MERiT (Mears Estate Repairs initiative Team) scheme, which extends appointment times into the evenings and weekends, and include more trades, such as plastering. Leigh Building Services will be offering a similar deal through its BEST (Building Estates Services Team) scheme.

“These are exciting developments in the short history of Wigan & Leigh Housing and come as a direct response to the wishes of tenants themselves. By extending both appointment times and the services on offer, we aim to have at least 70% of all repairs completed by the Merit and Best teams.”
Gas servicing and day to day gas heating repairs for the whole borough will continue to be carried out by the existing gas contractor BHE.
