Band Aid

Wigan’s housing chiefs are hoping their latest venture will raise the roof this weekend.

Youngsters from around the borough will be rocking the afternoon away at the Beer Engine at Poolstock, Wigan on Sunday (June 5th) in Wigan and Leigh Housing’s “Battle of the Bands”.

Bands from secondary schools and colleges around the borough will go head to head to see which school has the best young musical talent in the borough. Each band will play three songs in a bid to impress the judges, Chris Ashton and Alex Hurst, from local music instrument shop Music 90.

Each member of the winning band will receive a commemorative medal and the band will take away a trophy for their school or college to keep. The winners will also receive £150 of vouchers to spend at the Music 90 store in Wallgate, Wigan and a PA sound system for their school or college.

Chris Ashton commented:

“There’s a lot of untapped musical talent in the borough and it’s good that young people will have the opportunity to show what they can do in a real concert setting. I’m looking forward to a great afternoon. You never know, we may find a Wigan band that can follow in the footsteps of The Verve.”

Peter Gee, chief executive of Wigan and Leigh Housing, which is sponsoring the event as part of the company’s marketing week, said:

“We’re a company that provides housing services to the people of the borough and we wanted to include an event for our customers of the future.

“I’m sure that all the bands will give everything to try to win the battle and bring rewards for themselves and their school or college. May the best band win when the battle commences.”

“Battle of the Bands” starts at 1.30pm on June 5th. Young people will be allowed in to support their favourite band or just rock along. Soft drinks will also be available for the under 18’s.
