All Our Own Work - Children Show Their True Colours

Photo Opportunity

Photographers/reporters are invited to Wigan & Leigh Housing's Children's Art Exhibition at The Children's Library at The Wiend, Millgate, Wigan, at 10.45am on Wednesday June 1

Budding artists from primary schools across the borough will have a brush with success next week when they get to see their work up on the wall.

The Children's Library at The Wiend Centre in Wigan will be the venue for an exhibition of children's art on Wednesday June 1.

The event is part of Wigan & Leigh Housing's (WALH) Marketing Week and comes after a challenge was sent out to the children to draw and paint their best as part of a competition.

More than 500 children took part in the competition, which was open to three age groups, four to six years, seven to nine and 10 to 11.

Drawings and paintings were based on the theme of 'Where I Live' and the judging was carried out by a panel of council tenant representatives from WALH and students from Wigan & Leigh College.

The competition winners and the best of the rest will be on display at the exhibition and the prizes will be handed out by sporting mascots from Leigh Centurions, Wigan Athletic and Wigan Warriors.

There will be face-painting fun and a magician to entertain the crowds and there will also be a mystery special guest from the world of television!

Tenant representative and judge Peter Purcell said: "There was an amazing variety of drawings and paintings with some wonderfully colourful entries.

"The children had obviously put a lot of time and effort into their entries. I wish we could have given every child a prize but in the end we had to choose the ones that we thought were the most imaginative and colourful."

Marketing Week gives WALH the opportunity to promote its services and show its commitment to the community.

"We manage around 24,000 council properties in the borough," said WALH Chief Executive Peter Gee. "Together with our partner companies we have come up with a week of activities for people of all ages. I'd like to thank the teachers from all the schools who have helped make the art competition such a success. We hope to see a lot of families enjoying the exhibition and having a great time."
