You're Hired! Wigan Welcomes The Apprentice

Move over Alan Sugar because when it comes to giving eager young go-getters the best start, Wigan & Leigh Housing (WALH) is sweeter by far.

And this Friday (May 27) the company that manages Wigan's social housing stock will prove it with a special awards ceremony to celebrate the achievements of its own set of apprentices.

WALH's apprentice programme recruits young people aged from 16 to 24 and trains them for careers in housing management, information technology and business administration.

The programme combines practical work experience, with on the job training and NVQ qualifications. As the training is very job specific, almost all the apprentices move on to permanent jobs with the company.

Wigan Investment Centre will be the venue for the ceremony, which will see young people receive awards for achievement, motivation, customer service and progress and achievement on NVQ courses.

This year's ceremony will be extra special because the young hopefuls will get a masterclass in how to aim for the top from one of the country most successful sportsmen.

Multi-world record holding swimmer James Hickman, has been crowned world champion in various events and represented England at three Olympic games.

James, who hails from Manchester, will be on hand to give the young apprentice the winning edge with a key speech on motivation.

WALH chief executive Peter Gee said:

"Our 28 apprentices work extremely hard and make a huge contribution to the company. We are very proud of their achievements. Attracting the best staff is essential to the continued success of Wigan & Leigh Housing.

"Hearing of the achievements of these young people I am confident that we have the best staff and that our future is a bright one."
