Introducing Wigan & Leigh Housing

Wigan & Leigh Housing Company was set up on 1st April 2002 to manage and maintain Council homes on behalf of Wigan Council. Wigan & Leigh Housing is wholly owned by the Council. The company is responsible for managing all landlord services for Wigan Council's 23,500 homes including rent collection, repairs and maintenance, dealing with empty properties and all tenancy matters. We also deal with a number of other functions on behalf of the Council such as homelessness and council house sales.

A not for profit company, Wigan & Leigh Housing is managed by a Board of Directors. There are also two Area Boards, one managing the Wigan area and one managing the Leigh area. The three Boards are made up of one third Council Tenants, one third Council representatives and one third Independent people.

In 2002 Wigan & Leigh Housing went through a rigorous government inspection and was awarded a two star status. In February 2005 our two star rating was confirmed following a further inspection of our services by the government’s Audit Commission. The award of two star status enabled us to spend £137 million of extra money on improving council housing in the borough. We have made good progress on our massive improvement programme since 2002. Our successful partnership arrangements are delivering improvements that will enable us to comfortably meet the government’s decency standard for all Council homes by 2008.

Alongside the improvement programme Wigan & Leigh Housing is also committed to working in partnership with Wigan Council and is improving services and increasing tenant satisfaction for people in the borough.
