All Councils have by law to help those who are homeless or threatened with homelessness. Wigan and Leigh Housing is employed by Wigan Council to investigate all homeless presentations and decide what responsibility the Council has to the people applying as homeless.
The help that is given to homeless people depends on their individual circumstances and can include:

If you are homeless or fear you are likely to become homeless contact your nearest Area Housing Office who will be able to provide you with advice and assistance. |
In cases where more specialist advice, assistance or investigation is required you will be given an appointment with an officer from one of our specialist Housing Support Teams who will commence an investigation.

There are 4 surgeries every week:
Pemberton Area Housing Office - Monday 9.30am - 3.30pm
Atherton Area Housing Office - Tuesday 9.30am - 3.30pm
Hindley Area Housing Office - Thursday 9.30am - 3.30pm
Ashton Area Housing Office - Thursday 9.30am - 3.30pm
Outside normal office hours the Social Services Central Duty Team is responsible for giving basic advice and securing temporary accommodation for people that the Council has a duty to help under homeless legislation. This service should only be used in emergencies. Where possible you should contact the nearest Housing Support Team during normal office hours between Monday and Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm.
Between 5.00pm - 8.00pm weekdays and 8.45am - 1.00pm Saturday, the Duty Social Worker can be contacted on 01942 828777.
At all other times contact the Call Handling Centre on 0161 834 2436, who will take your details and arrange for the Duty Social Worker to call you back.
Wigan and Leigh Housing also operates a Homeless Out Of Hours Service with an Officer on duty between 7.00pm and 9.00am every day. This service can be accessed through the Duty Social Worker on the number above.
