Introducing the Company
Established in April 2002 Wigan & Leigh Housing Company was set up to manage and maintain Council homes on behalf of Wigan Council. A not for profit Company, it is wholly owned by the Council and the Company is responsible for managing all landlord services for Wigan Council’s 23,400 homes including rent collection, repairs and maintenance, as well as dealing with empty properties and all tenancy matters. In addition we also deal with homelessness and council house sales on behalf of the Council and work in partnership with them to improve services and increase tenant satisfaction.
Wigan & Leigh Housing is managed by a Board of Directors, made up of one third Council Tenants, one third Council representatives and one third Independent people. The board is currently reviewing its governance structure to ensure we deliver the new vision and best possible service.
In 2002 Wigan & Leigh Housing went through a rigorous government inspection and was awarded a two star status. The Government Inspectors also said we had promising prospects for improvement. With this award came £137m of extra money to spend on improving council housing in the borough and they are now delivering the largest ever improvement programme in Wigan.
In 2005 Wigan & Leigh Housing underwent a reinspection of all services. This confirmed the good 2 star rating but disappointingly said that we had uncertain prospects for improvement. However, virtually all services to customers were judged to be good to excellent.
